Fab fabric find

Fab fabric find

I found this metre-wide length of  heavy vintage linen not too long ago at the Rozelle Markets, and am in two minds about what to do with it: a stapled wall canvas for the babe’s room, or a sturdy tote for me? A wall canvas would show off the unusual print, which has a fairytale feel, but a tote would be grand, don’t you think?

A sofa cushion’s another possibility… this may take some time.

Stunning – that’s the only word for the new, vintage-inspired and handmade Summer collection from Ginny & Jude designer, Rabia Lockwood. Love love love (that’s three ‘loves’… can you tell how much I love it? Maybe I should add a fourth…)

MillaMia at Magnolia Square

There’s much sewing going on in my house, in my house… but one day, I will knit. And when I do, the chic, Swedish simplicity of MillaMia‘s patterns will be top of my To Do list. I bought a few of these books for knitting-mad friends earlier in the year. Check out their website for new additions – cushions, stockings and children’s clothing patterns – or pop along to visit them at Magnolia Square this weekend.

Look inside

Look inside... too simple

Whoa mama, I’ve been ill. I don’t remember ever being so utterly wiped out with ‘flu before but, joy – this morning dawned, windy and wild, and I felt almost recovered. Off to the markets, to pick up supplies and get back on schedule for the next book.

Although I never really head to the markets with a specific item in mind (too tricky, and too inevitably disappointing) I always have a loose list of objects to source running through my cluttered brain, just in case they crop up: luxe fabric remnants, ballerina prints, seventies kaftans, needlepoint cushions, beaded bits and bobs, vintage childrens’ toys and fabulous hats… just some of the things on the list. This morning, I found a fair few things that fall into those categories, all washed up on the shores of market stalls for one reason or another.

Since arriving home, I’ve been turning them over and over in my hands, figuring out what to do with them next. Above is a tea towel turned tote bag, chopped in half, sewn around the edges and stitched to wooden handles (chopped from another trashed bag, long gone). Just one idea for a tea towel you find too pretty to use.

And below, some cute things picked up for Olive – a pair of miniature boots (barely worn), a short scarf someone grew too tired of knitting to fully finish, and a beaded purse, the size of a shell. Cheap thrills indeed, but no less sweet for that.

A tour of the Burgundy brocante & countryside

s

A field of sunflowers from a moving car

When I think of Burgundy I think of sunflower fields spied from the back of a car, dusty little villages, and the grand architecture of Cluny; home to an impressive abbey. But most of all, I think of the rustic stone farmhouse we stayed in on our France trip, games on the lawn, and the bustling brocantes we visited on Bastille Day in the small village of Cormatin. You can see we were blessed with gorgeous weather.

And the beautiful linen… I could have filled up a ship container with the  stuff; along with plush armchairs, vintage trunks and chandeliers aplenty. How to narrow these down to a few images? Tricky indeed, but here they are.

Stay tuned for Paris…

Some Home Truths

Lovely tulip image by Germaine Leece

Last Thursday, journalist Germaine Leece visited me at home to share a cup of tea and a chat about our home for her website Some Home Truths. It’s a lovely blog about the importance of our living spaces and the comfort they bring… I urge you to stop by for a leisurely read. And if you’re interested, here’s the interview.

So said Keats, and by George he was right. Here’s a few close-up details of the items of clothing I found while fossicking in a flea market last weekend.

The kimonos are breathtaking – it was hard to come away with only three, and an obi belt – plus I’m pinching myself at the luck of finding a handmade Liberty print skirt. I will pick it apart and reinvent it. As what, I’m not yet sure but at $8, it was well worth the investment.

Easter egg cosies

Last weekend we headed off to visit some friends who live in a dreamy little town on the NSW south coast. I made these Easter egg cosies for the kids – Lucca, Helena & Gianni – popping them atop three chocolate eggs and simple ceramic egg cups.

But not before an early morning dash to the markets – see this gorgeous beaded top and bright pink silk sari? Both are becoming harder to find these days so I was thrilled to snap them up for a song. The sari I’ve earmarked for some fancy dress fun, and the beaded top perches on a picture rail while I’m deciding what to do with it.

Maybe the best market find… ever

My $70 find

My $70 find

Lordy I love a good flea market. For those of you in Sydney, I’ve unearthed some spectacular treasures at Rozelle Markets, the likes of which you’d be hard pressed to find even at Paris’ Les Puces.

But nothing beats this – a while back I woke up at the crack of dawn one fiery-hot Saturday, kissed my lovely husband and daughter goodbye and headed off. Stall holders were still setting up when I saw this black woollen dress hanging on a rack all by its lonesome. I swooped in and asked to try it on… possibly the only reason it hadn’t been nabbed already was the sweltering heat. But I purloined it early, and it fit like a glove. Joy.

I only hope there’s no bad karma attached… A gift from the former owner’s ex-husband twenty years before, the dress lasted longer than the marriage but she couldn’t bear to look at it any longer. Enter, me.

All it needs is a few stitches to the hem but it’s otherwise perfect. Sigh.

Life Instyle and Able & Game

x

This is where I’m headed next week – the Life Instyle event in Sydney, “the most exclusive showing of beautiful things”.  I met with one of the organisers some time ago and was so impressed by the amount and quality of markets-slash-events they have coming up over the next year in most major Australian cities.

And check out the gorgeous work of Melbourne-based card makers Able & Game below while you’re at it – just one of the many exhibitors. Fabbo.
