The Beauty Bubble – latest Vogue article

x

Check out the current issue of Vogue for my latest article, ‘The Beauty Bubble’. What’s it all about? Front-row seats, upgrades to first class, faster service… there really are perks for looking perfect (as if we didn’t know! actually, there’s much more to it than that…)

Fascinating people I interviewed for the piece were NY-based Aussie model, Nicole Trunfio; actress, model and producer of the HBO series In Treatment, Noa Tishby; sociology professor Salvatore Babones and psychologist Denise Greenaway. Let me know your own thoughts on the subject if you get a chance to read it.

Congratulations on your article! I looked up your blog after last month’s Vogue article and…wow! I feel inspired to create a more beautiful living space and am plotting to go and buy your new book to get the kiddos involved in Operation Redecoration.

As for the whole ‘beauty as burden or blessing’ issue, I think you covered all the angles and I loved your inclusion of some psychology research. Way back, as an undergrad, I was horrified by research showing that teachers’ expectations of academic success were influenced by students’ attractiveness. The importance our culture places on beauty is inescapable but we’re more likely to behave rationally if we are aware of our potential bias.

Whilst in Collins Books trying to justify buying “Crafty Kids”, I was also drawn to “The Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Elect Presidents, Control Markets, Wage Wars, and Save Our Lives” by Shankar Vedantam. One reviewer says, “Vedantam theorizes that there’s a hidden world in our heads filled with unconscious biases, often small, hidden errors in thinking that manipulate our attitudes and actions without our knowing it”. I believe the halo effect of our assessment of someone’s attractiveness is a great example of our ‘hidden brain’. Paradoxically, we’ll be more aware of our beauty bias if we read Vogue! This month at least.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply and feedback on the article – I really appreciate it. The Hidden Brain sounds fascinating… it might actually supply some reasons for all the craziness this election! I’m intrigued… :)
